Dog Behaviour Problems

Dog obedience classes are excellent environments for helping owners to train their dogs and to overcome simple behavioural issues.

However, the causes of more serious issues can be quite complex and it is better to see and assess a dog in its own environment to establish these causes and to work out a solution that is best for the dog and its owner.

Behavioural issues could be - aggression issues, seperation anxiety, fears and phobias, hyperactivity, boisterousness, puppy visits, etc.

At ABC for dogs our assessment starts with the first phone call where we gather basic details from you and may suggest some possible solutions to help you with your dogs behaviour before our attendence.

After this (if you want us to) we come to your home and conduct a thorough and detailed discussion and observation programme.

Consultations may last between 2 to 3 hours, although this may be longer if two or more dogs are involved. During the consultation your dog’s problems will be discussed in detail and the dog will be assessed using EMRA, a holistic approach that focuses on your pets emotions. EMRA stands for Emotional, Mood State and Reinforcement Analysis, which put simply

• Analyses how your pet feels on a day to day basis - are they fully content with life?

• Determines how your pet feels when the problematic situation arises

• Looks at why your pet is continuing to perform the problematic behaviour

If any training is required then this will be demonstrated and you will be asked to have a go yourself so that we are sure you will be happy working on your own – you will also be supplied with training sheets so you have guidance to help you proceed. Please note that all training methods taught are based on scientific principles and learning theory, without resorting to punitive, unkind or aversive methods.

This will be followed up with free advice over the telephone should you need it. We will also recommend as to whether any further visits would be needed.

These initial visits can vary in length of time (from 1-3 hrs) dependent on severity of the problem.

Price for a standard behavioural visit covering issues such as hyperactivity, toilet training, puppy visits, fears and phobia etc are £30 per hour.

Price for an aggression issue is £150. This price includes a follow up visit along with a full report containing a full assessment and a tailored training schedule for you and your dog.We also supply as much free telephone/email/skype advice and support as you need.

You may be able to claim for our fees through your pet insurance company. For further details of this please click here.
